The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition

White & Case is the Global Partner of The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. In 2010 White & Case sponsored the international rounds of the competition and the Jessup Cup, funded ten national or regional competitions, and supported travel costs for teams from several countries, allowing them to participate in the international competition in Washington, DC.

The Jessup Competition is an international law advocacy moot in which law students present oral and written pleadings before a simulated International Court of Justice. Founded in 1959, it is administered around the world by the International Law Students Association. Over 600 teams from over 90 countries participate in the Jessup Competition, making it the largest moot court competition in the world.

White & Case founded the Russian National Championship of the Jessup Competition in February 2002. Since then, a team of White & Case lawyers and administrators have organized the Russian National Championship of the Jessup Competition every year. In 2010 teams from 56 Russian law schools participated in the competition, making it the largest national competition in the world. The Russian National Championship will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2011.

Around the world, participation in the Jessup Competition is regarded as a great start for a career in international law. The contest engages students in legal research, preparing written submissions to a Court and presenting oral arguments in a courtroom setting. The competition is held entirely in English, which makes it challenging but also very exciting.

The 2011 Jessup problem will address the legality of the use of unmanned drones and international anti-corruption law.
